Chapter Ten

With a heave and a roar, a handful of Pitcairn males pushed and shoved at the longboat, rocking the huge, steel boat until it began its lumbering slide down the greased slipway. The jetty was a writhing mass of excited hotel guests and islanders taking advantage of the chance to fish. Each boasted they’d catch the first of the yellowtail tuna, or the biggest of the deep sea coral trout.

Kate watched as the second boat slid down the slipway and into the harbor. One utilized for the search for tuna, the other for hand line fishing. She pushed her sunglasses up the bridge of her nose and squinted into the sun. It was going to be a beautiful day for it. The heat of the mid-morning sun already dictated that sun-block and hats were a must. The ocean, seeming to understand the importance of a problem free run day, cooperated with a glassy smoothness.

Bryce grinned at her as he walked towards the ramp leading down to the jetty, a large rope wound into a bundle looped over his shoulder. “Should manage to catch a couple of big fish today. You’re on my boat, so you can see how we do it.” She gave him the thumbs up and left him to ready the boats, turning to her own unfinished jobs.

She corralled the hotel guests together and raised her voice over the hubbub of excited voices. “Alright! I need to know who wants to tow for the big fish, and who’d like to try their chances on the hand lines.” She moved behind Celia, who volunteered to be a guide, and put her hands on the woman’s shoulders. “Celia will hand out bait and reels to the ones who prefer to try the Pitcairn style of hand fishing. She’ll give you some quick lessons on the best way to fish from the longboat.”

Celia waved and beamed at the eager guests that swarmed toward her. “That’s right. Thanks Kate. Craig and I will give you a hand. So, if you’ve got problems, let us know.” She ushered those guests who chose her team into a waiting longboat. Then, handing out life jackets, she assisted the crowd onboard.

Kate smiled and watched the longboat power out of the harbor, then gathered the few wanting to go for the bigger game fish. The draw of fighting a large fish unwilling to be pulled out of the deep seas, plus circling the island by sea was a huge attraction to the last of the guests remaining. Kate knew that none of these people had seen the island as she had when she arrived on the yacht. Experiencing the majesty of the isolated isle from the sea would be very different than seeing the island by air, or via quad bike tour.

Sir Arthur hurried down the steps to the Jetty. A wide hat was jammed down over his head, his face and arms gleaming white with a liberal application of sun block, he vibrated with excitement.
